Y2mate is a free online tool for saving YouTube videos as MP4 and audio as MP3, built and looked after by a small independent team. This page explains what we do, how the tool works and what we stand for.
A small team behind a simple tool
We are a small group of people who wanted a YouTube downloader that just works. No accounts, no apps to install, no confusing steps. Y2mate is the result: one page, one box for your link, and a clear list of choices.
We keep the site lean on purpose. Every feature has to earn its place, and if something makes the tool slower or harder to understand, we leave it out.
What Y2mate does
Paste a YouTube link and Y2mate shows you the video's title, its length and the formats you can save. Regular watch links, short youtu.be links, Shorts, mobile links and YouTube Music links all work.
For video, you can pick an MP4 in 144p, 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p or 1080p, and each option shows its file size before you tap it. Every video quality includes sound. For audio, you can save an MP3 at 320, 256, 192, 128 or 64 kbps. Smaller sizes are handy when phone storage or data is tight; higher qualities suit bigger screens and good headphones.
How the Y2mate downloader works
When you paste a link, Y2mate looks the video up live at that moment. Tapping a quality opens the file in a new browser tab, coming straight from YouTube's video servers. On a phone, the browser may start playing it; just use the browser menu or a long-press to download or save it. On a computer, you can right-click and choose Save video as.
We don't store anything. Video details and links are fetched fresh for each visitor and never saved, the site hosts no files, and we keep no download history. Long videos work too, with no length limit.
- Private, age-restricted, members-only, removed or region-blocked videos may not work.
- Live streams that are still running can't be saved.
- For a playlist link, only the single video in that link is saved.
What we care about
Our priorities are simple, and they guide every change we make to the site.
- Speed: you go from link to file in a couple of taps, with no waiting room in between.
- Simple design: plain words, big buttons and a layout that works on any screen, from phones to Chromebooks.
- Privacy: no sign-up and no saved downloads. We use Google Analytics and cookies only for anonymous visit statistics, and Cloudflare for hosting and security.
- Fair use: we ask everyone to save only videos they own, that are in the public domain or openly licensed, or that they have permission to keep for personal use.
